Safe water borehole for Kore, Eggu, Wa West District
The 300-strong community of Kore has no safe potable water. When the river is in flow, its banks are steep and dangerous. In the long dry seasons, the only water available comes from sump holes dug deep into the river bed — a laborious and hazardous task, particularly for women and children who make these journeys alone, often in darkness. A young girl lost her life to a snake bite while drawing water at dawn.
The sources they can reach are diseased and infested with spirogyra. The community must also compete with animals for the same water, where the animals often urinate and defecate nearby, adding serious contamination to an already dangerous supply.

Having their own safe water borehole will mean a closer source of potable, hygienic water that will significantly reduce water-borne diseases, improve health and livelihoods, and end the daily danger of travelling to these unsafe sources.
